There is much more information on the biosynthetic steps, enzyme reactions and the genetic control of formation of such metabolites as amino acids or nucleotides which permits a rational approach to obtaining high-production strains and to developing high-yield technological procedures. With natural substances, such as alkaloids, antibiotics or pigments, the situation is much more complicated. We have now at our disposal only fragmentary data on the biosynthetic pathway and on their intermediates; of the enzyme reactions participating in the biosynthetic pathways we are nearly ignorant.
He is of the opinion that the formation of this compound is induced by the accumulation of 6-methylsalicylic acid in the medium; other intermediates are likewise attributed the role of inducers of the synthesis of further enzymes.
