For instance, hard bop performers castigated Dewey Johnson and Frank Wright when John Coltrane asked them to record with his group in 1965. Rather than first establishing a reputation among hard bop performers as proficient exponents of the hard bop style, Johnson chose instead to explore out approaches to playing the trumpet. When Coltrane hired him, many hard bop musicians questioned Johnson's lack of experience, unproven technical abilities, and right to accept Coltrane's offer. In more recent times, critics have found new bones to pick.

The music is really not happening now. I can listen to it and appreciate what some guys are doing. But when you really get down to taking care of business, it's not happening from what was started in the sixties. . There is no one out there who is a true innovator force. I listen to them on records or radio. I listen to horn or drum players and I say these guys don't see what is really happening. I just did a percussion album with [Andrew] Cyrille, [Don] Moye, [Kenny] Clarke, and we got Max [Roach] to do the liner notes and to unify it.
